Motivation for studying abroad

Study Abroad

Why did you decide to study abroad in India? Please tell us the comparison with other countries and the deciding factor.
Before studying abroad, I was interested in India, a country with diverse races, religions, nature, and culture, and its unique traditional farming methods. I decided to study abroad in India when I learned about the existence of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR Scholarships), an Indian government scholarship that provides tuition and living expenses. Another factor that made me decide is that it is a niche study abroad destination with few Japanese students.

Preparation period before studying abroad, how to study a language

Did you need a few months of preparation from the time you thought about studying abroad until you actually left for the site?
At first I tried to apply for the 2008 ICCR scholarship, but I had to give up because of lack of preparation, and the following year I applied for the 2009 scholarship and passed it. Therefore, the total preparation period is two years. Studying in India doesn’t require much TOEFL or other tests, so I don’t spend much time studying English. The actual preparation period for application documents is about 2 months.

Please tell us what was the hardest part of the preparation period and whether you had enough time.
The Indian government scholarship was recruited every year in a fixed month, and I had enough time to plan and prepare from the previous year. There was no problem at Japanese universities because documents such as transcripts are easily available, but it was difficult to get two letters of recommendation from a university professor. Also, my English ability was very low at that time, so I had a hard time reading the instructions and preparing the documents when writing the documents in English.

How did you study Indian local language or English before studying abroad? Did you take the language test?
I took the TOEFL twice in the language test, but the standard of English proficiency required by the ICCR scholarship is not as high as that of native English speakers. Before studying abroad, I actively took classes in English at the university and tried to come into contact with English on a daily basis. I also listened to an English podcast and practiced listening, but it wasn’t useful because Indian English and American English were so different. My English ability has improved dramatically since I came to the site and started taking classes in English.

What kind of study method do you think is the most effective in language learning?
Before studying abroad, I think it is effective to learn the technical terms of your academic field as much as possible. Also, at my university, I couldn’t learn how to compose sentences, so if you have a native teacher in Japan, I think it’s a good idea to voluntarily create and correct English sentences.

How did you collect information about studying in India?
Information gathering is mainly on the Internet.  Before studying abroad, I visited the study abroad area in India and agricultural facilities once and received information directly from the local people.

Inquiries to local schools

How did you get in touch with the school? Also, please tell us the specific content of the question to the extent that it does not matter.
Since I applied via the ICCR scholarship, I did not exchange information about study abroad procedures with the university, but the professor who supervises the admission of international students from the website of the study abroad destination school to confirm whether the university accepts ICCR scholarship students. I got the e-mail address of and contacted directly by e-mail.

Did you have any problems when contacting us?
I often get late replying to emails, and I have called directly from Japan to an Indian university to confirm information, but I communicated because I was not accustomed to the accent of Indian English and my English ability was low. Was difficult.

About application

Please tell me the documents submitted at the time of application and the specific method of submission.
When applying for the ICCR scholarship, I brought the designated set of application documents directly to the office of the Japan Student Services Organization in Odaiba and the Embassy of India in Japan. It seems that it was also possible to mail it. Currently, there seems to be some changes in the application method. Please refer to the following Japan Student Services Organization page for details of documents .
Since it was written as a research plan in the list of this document, I took the time to prepare the plan in English, but when I submitted it directly to the embassy, when I applied for the bachelor’s or master’s level. Was told that he didn’t need a research plan. I think you need to make sure that the research plan is required for the course you want to apply for.

Have you ever had a hard time getting a formal permit from your application? How did you solve it?
The official permit arrived directly from the embassy, so there wasn’t much trouble. Also, as a government scholarship recipient, I was able to issue a visa without any problems.

Entrance examination

Did you take the entrance exam? Also, please tell me the subject and contents.
The entrance examination was a document screening, an interview at the Indian Embassy in Japan, and a written examination in English when going through the ICCR scholarship system.  We had an interview with the Indian government in English and asked about their motivation and why they chose India. The Japanese government side was Japanese. The written test in English was a general education.

Scholarship / tuition reduction / exemption system

Where did you get information on scholarships or tuition exemptions? What kind of preparations and procedures (document submission, interview, etc.) did you make to use it?
There was an interview after submitting the documents.

Please tell us your impressions of using the scholarship or the tuition reduction and exemption system.
The amount of scholarship paid was enough to lead a student life. In response to rising prices, there was a 1,000 rupee increase from last year. Being a government scholarship international student also has the benefits of being less likely to cause problems in immigration and being more likely to get a good impression from those around you.

Obtaining a visa / residence permit, etc.

(Japan Student Services Organization Note: Documents required for procedures are those of the time in the area, and you must check the latest information at your own risk when applying.)
What kind of documents are required to obtain a visa ? Or did you need a procedure? Please tell us what you were careful about.
Obtaining a student visa through an ICCR scholarship required the following documents:
・ Admission permit (letter) from the university you are enrolling in
・ Bank deposit certificate
・ Resume (Curriculum Vitae)
・ Letter from the Indian Embassy in Japan

What documents and procedures did I need to get a residence permit? Please tell us what you were careful about.
Since the place of residence is an international student dormitory on the campus of the university, the residence permit was issued through the dormitory staff. It was issued after admission was completed and a deposit of 10,000 rupees was paid for admission.
